A winter weekend getaway to Yosemite

Have you ever heard the phrase “the mountains are calling and I must go” well I am pretty sure that Yosemite National Park inspired John Muir to come up with this phase. No matter how many times I visit Yosemite, each time brings something very special and intimate for me. I have always hesitate to travel to Yosemite in the winter as the conditions can bring their own set of challenges, but I promise those challenges are what makes visiting Yosemite in the winter that much more special!

In this weekend guide I hope to inspire you to break out those snow boots and tire chains and make the visit!

Fresh fallen snow in the valley

Alight lets start with how much time do you need in the park? Honestly, I could be here for weeks, but I think you could get your fill and see all the highlights in a weekend.

Here are my top things to see!

Yosemite lower falls :

This is a short 1 mile walk up to the falls. Be sure to bring microspikes as the trail can get slippery!

Mirror Lake Loop:

Tip! Hop on the YARTS bus to take you to the right to the trailhead start. This is a gorgeous, easy trail. The total distance is 2.3 miles from the upper pines campground.

Yosemite Valley Floor Loop:

This epic drive takes you all along the most epic viewpoints of Yosemite! El Capitan, Bridal Veil Falls, Yosemite Falls and Mirror Lake just to name a few. Don’t miss the Yosemite Chapel, its magical dusted in snow!

Experience the Firefalls in February:

In the middle of February experience the magic of horsetail falls glow! While I personally have not seen these I am adding this to a winter bucket list must see! Due to crowd control if you plan to visit during this time be sure to book your reservation HERE.

FAQ’s on visiting the park!

Do you need tire chains? YES! pack them, at anytime these may become required. Also, be sure you are comfortable to put these on as there are no services to do this for you.

Where is the best place to stay? By far I love the Tenya Lodge. I stay here every time we visit the park. This lodge features an indoor pool and two hot tubs for those cold winter nights. For a more budget friendly option this Best Western is a good option with a free breakfast!

What to wear? Well, this is California so come prepared with layers! I love these warm leggings paired with a cozy fleece jacket.

I hope this post inspires you to visit Yosemite in the winter!

xoxo,

Jacqueline
