Big Island Hawaii blew me away with its dramatic volcanic landscape, abundance of wildlife and less ” touristy” feel. From north to south, east and west each area of the island has something a bit different to explore. Below I will breakdown my favorite day trips that we took in hopes to convince you why Big Island is my favorite out of all the islands.
You will not find any fluffy white sand on this beach. With spread out lava rock, you have to jump in off rugged rocks and come early because parking is scarce! Once you jump in you will be surrounded with thousands of colorful fish and coral-rich waters. This place was so amazing we came back and skipped another beach I had on my list. It is said if you get up early and swim out past the reef you have a high chance on running into Hawaiian spinner dolphins! Please be aware that stepping on coral destroys it. Do your part before you jump in to be sure you will not land on coral. Remember leave no trace!
This large saltwater pool that is tucked away between apartment buildings is not the easiest find. If I am being honest, I would not get in the pool; however the concept is amazing and it has a pretty epic view of the ocean.
For that famous black sand this is your spot. You will also most likely see several sea turtles on the beach hanging out. Please be respectful of the wildlife and do not take any sand! We came late in the afternoon after visiting the volcano national park and the sunset was pretty amazing! Highly recommend making time to visit this beach if you are on the big island!
Now, this is not a specific place to visit but I had to add that doing a boat / dolphin snorkel is an absolute month. Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures was an absolute highlight of our trip. We were able to see hundreds of dolphins and even whales on this adventure. If you are visiting the Big Island this is not something I would miss. There are many tours that are offered but I highly recommend this tour.
